![]() The Sault News made attempts to contact Jere and the former Superior Township firefighters.Īt the following township board meeting on June 27, dozens of community members attended to express their concerns and disappointment with the situation. Most of the former Superior Township firefighters have since found new jobs in nearby fire departments. Firefighters from Soo Township, Bay Mills Township and Dafter Township Volunteer fire departments responded to the fire. This partnership was seen in action on June 26 when a house fire on the Bay Mills reservation claimed the lives of six pets. Superior Township is part of an agreement with other local fire departments, who agreed to cover Superior Township whenever necessary for a fee. This left the fire department completely unstaffed, raising concerns about fire response times and safety. Some of them stated that they were doing so in support of their chief. Some local community members were in attendance and spoke out in support of the chief during public comment.Īll of the remaining firefighters in the department then turned in their resignations within a few days of Jere being fired. The board claims that Jere hired a new firefighter without permission of the board, and gave him a locker and uniform despite being uninsured.įor these two reasons, the board voted 4-0 in favor of terminating Jere on that day. All firefighter positions have to be approved by the board of trustees after application in order to fully insure the firefighters and the department. According to the board, Jere also hired another firefighter to her team without board approval. ![]()
